Terminology
There are a number of Korean terms in Taekwondo that students should learn, ranging from commands to the names of different strikes.
General Commands
- Charyot
- Attention stance where the feet are together and hands at the sides.
- Kyong Ye
- Command to bow, showing respect to the instructor, opponent, or class.
- Joon Bi
- Ready stance with feet shoulder-width apart and hands in front of the body.
- Baro
- Command to return to the ready stance.
- Dojang
- Training hall or studio for Taekwondo practice.
- Kihap
- A loud shout to focus energy and intimidate the opponent.
Kicks (Chagi)
- Ap Chagi
- Front kick, executed with the ball of the foot.
- Dollyo Chagi
- Roundhouse kick, performed with a rotational motion.
- Yop Chagi
- Side kick, executed with the blade of the foot.
- Dwi Chagi
- Back kick, performed by turning the body and kicking backward.
Philosophy and Principles
- Taekwondo
- Translates to "the way of the foot and fist," combining physical technique with mental discipline.
- Tenets of Taekwondo
- Includes courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit.
- Moo Do
- Martial way or path, emphasizing the philosophy behind training.
- Shim Sa
- Testing or grading, the process of evaluating a student's progress.
